Crafting A Christmas Stocking – The Journey Begins

There’s a reason why I haven’t posted much about creating my own decorations or gifts: quite honestly, I’m not very good at handcrafts. Still, this autumn, I picked up knitting to make some woollen socks for my dear ones.

Woollen socks have a strong foundation in Finnish culture — many people know how to knit them, and it’s common to receive them from friends and relatives. They’re warm and comfortable to wear, especially at home, so I completely understand why! Since I’m not so great with handcrafts, I like to follow a relatively easy pattern. Novita has a really nice and simple pattern for beginners to follow, and the result is warm and nicely fitting.

Anyway, after knitting four pairs of socks during the same autumn, I kind of got fed up. Still, I wanted to experience that quiet, peaceful feeling that using my hands brought me, so I got an idea: I could try crocheting!

My good friend told me she had knitted a Christmas stocking to hang on the wall or above the fireplace, and that really sparked my creativity. Could I try crocheting one myself? A little investigation on the internet showed me that it’s absolutely possible. I particularly fell in love with pattern number 21 — Berry Beautiful Stocking — so all that’s left is to get the materials and start working!

Even though I really loved the pale violet in the original pattern, I decided to go with my favourite Christmas colours: white and blue. I already had a crochet hook, so I only needed to get the yarn and some cardboard to create the pom poms — and I’m so excited to begin!

The yarn I am starting my project with.

While browsing the yarns in the store, I impulsively decided to pick up a ball of glittery yarn as well. I’m planning to add it to the cuff of the stocking to bring some variety and a festive holiday feel. I can’t wait to see how this turns out!
