Crafting the Christmas Stocking – The Hard Part

So I already revealed that I’m attempting to try my skills in the art of crocheting. Getting the idea was great and all, but then came the reality of following the pattern.

I have crocheted pot covers and similar small items before, so I thought I knew enough to simply follow the instructions. Boy, was I wrong. I didn’t even understand the terminology used in the pattern! I had to go back and check whether it was really labelled “easy,” considering how tough it was to begin with.

But I decided I needed to create something, so I started crocheting loops. I’m not going to lie — I felt genuine despair, especially at the very beginning, when the round tip of the stocking was made and it looked nothing like in the pictures! Later I realised I had used the wrong stitch, which made the fabric look a bit more airy than it should have, but I decided to keep going anyway. On the blue part I almost lost confidence when I realized how many hours it was going to take, but I kept going regardless and managed to finish it all.

I must admit the end result is probably not good enough to sell, but if nothing else, my knowledge of the craft has increased significantly.

So apparently this round starter is called a “magic loop.”
The blue part is made using “berry stitches.” These are surprisingly complex, since so many loops are created on a single stitch.

But here is the final result! This was definitely more difficult and far more work than I expected, but the outcome is definitely pretty. I will hang this on the wall as a Christmas decoration, of course, although I am a bit saddened that no gifts are going to find their way inside — it’s simply not the custom here in Finland!

Here we have the finished stocking! The journey was long and rough, but I made it!
