Independence Day is a big deal here in Finland. As a relatively young country, there are still people who remember what life was like before independence. The day is filled with events across the nation, and many beloved traditions. Watching the film Unknown Soldier, tuning in to see the annual military parade, and witnessing the president shake hands with a thousand guests at the grand Independence Day reception are some of the most common ways people celebrate.
Normally, I participate a bit more, but for some reason, today has felt relatively normal for me. With so much to do and feeling a bit tired from the week, I decided not to put too much pressure on myself.
That said, I did keep a few traditions alive. I watched the military parade, cooked a nicer meal, and lit blue-and-white candles by the window, as is customary. I also managed to fit in my long run today—thanks to the holiday, I had the extra time!
One thing I’m especially pleased about is finally getting my new winter curtains! I surprised myself by choosing red, even though I had initially planned on blue or an earthier tone. To be honest, I love them! The color is vibrant and festive, and the print works well year-round. It was such a nice find.
