Movies bring the magic alive.

I have discussed a lot about music in this blog, but there is another branch of culture that has become a very dear part of global Christmas celebration that I have not mentioned a word about. I am, of course, talking about Christmas movies!

Me not obsessing about them has a very good reason; I have not watched that many. I am not a movie person, and I have lived happily for many years without owning a television, purchasing Netflix, or anything like that at all. It is not that movies are not good; I just prefer doing something else instead.

This year, I decided to do otherwise. Maybe it is because of all the memes that have been popular lately (if someone is not familiar with these, I will link one below). I don’t know if I have seen any hallmark Christmas movies, but I sure recognize the plot. What makes it even more amusing is that I am a woman in my thirties living in a city alone and coming to my hometown on Christmas, so it is extremely interesting what kind of expectations the culture offers for people like me.

Maybe I don’t have a sense of humor since I tend to read it so that people do not think this kind of life is worth living, and I admit, it annoys me. I am currently very happy, maybe happier than ever. It is, of course, great to visit family and childhood friends, but my life and home are in the big city. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. But as said, maybe I should watch the movie in a slightly lighter mood.

Maybe I should watch one of these hallmark movies this year? If I do not manage to gather enough courage to do that, I will probably have to pick one of my old favorites. A very likely choice is, of course, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, not only because it is funny but also because everyone else here likes it. One of my definite favourites is a Finnish cartoon, Joulupukki ja noitarumpu (Santa Claus and the Magic Drum). I have seen that so many times that I already know it by heart, but the story is warming and the music of the movie is light.

As a special mention, I need to mention the short movie The Snowman. That is shown on Finnish television on Christmas Eve, so I am not going to watch it yet, but it is a core part of the Christmas celebration, so it felt just wrong to not mention it here.

What is your favourite Christmas movie?

P.S. It is the winter solstice today. The length of the day is depressingly short—only 5 hours and 21 minutes. When I am writing this, dawn is still over an hour away. But, on the bright side, it will get better from here, and the lighter days are coming.
