Despite the delicious topic, I do not have any sweets or chocolate here at home. I just arrived here after my workday at the office, and since I was freezing there the whole day, I wanted to go straight home without visiting the grocery store. I have to survive on what I have in my cabinets, which is definitely not sweets. Luckily, that does not prevent me from teasing myself by thinking about them!
Like probably everywhere in the world, Christmas is full of all kinds of candy and pastries. And just like in most of the world, probably the most common thing to eat is chocolate. Finnish people love sweets, and we have several brands of our own here that all produce Christmas boxes.
The most popular chocolate box in Finland is definitely Juhlapöydän konvehteja (literally, confectionery chocolates for a feast) by the company Panda. I could swear every Finn knows this box, and most have some opinions about their favorite and least favorite pieces there. This box also includes one of the most legendary chocolate flavors of all time: pineapple. That one was my favorite as a child, but nowadays, I need to admit, I prefer the others.
When we are talking about legendary Christmas sweets, it is impossible not to mention Vihreät kuulat. These green marmalade globes are so sweet and surprisingly large that it is not even funny. I am not the biggest fan of them, but they are loved by many here (and also abroad!).
My own favorite chocolate at Christmas and also at other times is Fazerina. This is a chocolate that is filled with an orange-flavored chocolate truffle filling, and it is just the best. I know orange flavor divides opinions really hard, so I would not suggest this if you already know you are not a friend of orange.
So, there it is: my view of the Finnish Christmas sweets. I have not yet selected which ones I would like to buy this year; I have resisted and not opened the chocolate season yet. Maybe this year is time for something new.
