Music creates the correct atmosphere.

There is no denying it. I love music all year long. I am listening to music constantly while I am working, I have energizing playlists on while I run, and even on weekends, the first thing I do after waking up is to put on my portable speaker to listen to it when I am making my morning coffee.

One thing the constant rehearsing has caused, however, is that I am in constant need of new music. I mean, the classics are evergreen for a reason, but nothing is better than finding a new, great Christmas song.

Thus, it is not a surprise that music is a large part of my Christmas as well. I know quite a few songs by heart, and one of my dearest memories from childhood is the Christmas concerts we had at school every year. I know some people are almost sick of Christmas songs because they were rehearsed all autumn every year, but for me, that was always a very joyful time.

I do not have any favourite genres, so it all goes. There is one thing that irritates me, though, and that is the overplayed Christmas songs. That means that Mariah Carey or WHAM! are never going to be found on my playlist. There is nothing wrong with the songs; they have just been playing on every radio channel for over ten years, always in the same version. My ears require something a bit fresher…

Below, I am listing a few of my favourites of all kinds of Christmas songs. These are not the only ones by far, or even in any kind of order.

My favourite classic Finnish songs

This song is an old classic. It was a surprise to me that the original poem from which the song is made is not Finnish but actually Swedish. In any case, it is a beautiful poem and a beautiful story and the melody fits the text. It is also very easy to sing along, even if the lyrics can be hard to remember.

“Tonttuvaari” is a song from my school days. This was performed at my first Christmas concert by my class and was a well-liked piece for a good reason. Like the previous song, this one tells the story of an old Christmas elf who remembers his youth. I am still amazed why this song is not more popular than it currently is, to be honest.

My favourite classic international songs

Jazz is a real classic Christmas song genre. Maybe it is even cliche to listen to all kinds of jazz only once a year. Like many others, I am no exception there. Some combinations just work, and this is one of them. There are many great Christmas songs in jazz versions, but I decided to pick one that is not that widely known, at least in Finland. I do not know what I like about this song; it just has great vibes.

One of the more unconventional combos is pop-punk and Christmas. But I just cannot help but love it anyway. Again, my chosen song is not that widely sung in Finland.

My favourite new songs

More pop-punk to the people! This song has a very unconventional story since it is a very modern one. Very refreshing.

I don’t know if this song is classified as a new song or not, but this version definitely is. The whole album is great, but I decided on this song since all my other selections were more energetic.

It was so difficult to pick just a couple of songs! There are so many to choose from! But, luckily, the world is full of great, ready-made playlists to choose from.
