The Day After

I did it—I made it home! While that might not sound like an amazing achievement, yesterday’s journey was filled with unexpected obstacles that made it feel like quite the adventure.

My long trek home began in Dresden, where I caught an 11 o’clock train back to Prague. I love trains, to be honest, but they can be unpredictable. If you’ve got a flight waiting, like I did, it’s always best to plan for delays and give yourself plenty of time. Luckily, this time everything went smoothly—the train was perfectly on schedule.

Thanks to that, I even had a couple of extra hours to revisit some of my favorite spots in Prague and treat myself one last time before heading to the airport. Feeling a bit tired, I decided to go early. I had a book with me, so I didn’t mind the wait.

That’s when things started to go sideways. As boarding time approached, the gate still hadn’t been announced. Eventually, I learned that my flight was delayed by over an hour. Delays happen, of course, but I was immediately nervous because I knew I’d miss my reserved train home from Helsinki—and there wouldn’t be any later ones.

What made it worse was the looming possibility of the flight being canceled altogether. There’s currently a major pilot strike causing cancellations, and I was terrified I’d end up stuck in Prague for another two days, all alone.

Just when I was feeling my most anxious, something magical happened: a random choir at the airport began performing Christmas carols! They were so talented, and it was exactly what I needed at that moment. Their performance completely lifted my spirits and helped pass half an hour of waiting.

In the end, the flight departed—even if a bit late—and we landed in Helsinki about an hour behind schedule. To my surprise and relief, I discovered there was a late-night bus heading to my hometown. Without hesitation, I bought a ticket.

I wish I could say the story ends there, but at 2 a.m., while we were on route, the bus broke down! By that point, though, I’d already been through so much that I couldn’t even muster the energy to feel upset. It turned out to be unnecessary anyway—the driver, with nerves of steel, managed to get the bus running again in what felt like a desperate situation. We arrived home a bit later than planned, but we made it!

Now, the next day, I’m still tired but incredibly grateful to be home safe. So many things went wrong during my trip back, but it could’ve been so much worse. I’m home, and that’s what matters most.

My hyacinth bloomed beautifully while I was away.
I decided to get a second flower after all.
